Frequently Asked Questions About Supported Independent Living (SIL) in Melbourne & Perth
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
SIL is NDIS funding for a support worker to assist you with daily tasks and skill-building, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can live as independently as possible, either in shared living or on your own.
What’s the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL is the support you receive (help from workers with daily tasks), while SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is the physical home designed for high physical support needs. You can have both SIL and SDA together if your needs require it.
Who is eligible for SIL at Alpha Community Care?
SIL is available to NDIS participants with disabilities who require ongoing, significant person-to-person support in a home setting. You must have an approved NDIS plan that includes funding under “Assistance with Daily Life.” Alpha Community Care serves participants in Melbourne (VIC) and Perth (WA).
How do I get SIL funding included in my NDIS plan?
Work with your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to request SIL during your plan review. You’ll need supporting documentation, typically an Occupational Therapist (OT) assessment, and your provider will prepare a roster of care and quote for the NDIS to approve.
What does SIL funding cover?
SIL covers support worker assistance with personal care, household tasks, shared living arrangements, skill development, community participation, and overnight/sleepover support. It does not cover rent, groceries, or other day-to-day living expenses.
What are the three levels of SIL support?
The NDIS funds SIL at three levels:
(1) Lower needs, supervision of living arrangements, not usually 24/7;
(2) Standard needs, 24/7 support including assistance with most daily tasks and overnight sleepovers;
(3) Higher needs, 24/7 active overnight support, including management of complex behaviours with positive behaviour support.
Does Alpha Community Care offer 24/7 SIL support in Melbourne and Perth?
Yes. Alpha Community Care provides 24/7 on-site support across all SIL homes, including properties in Melbourne (VIC) and Perth (WA), including Harmony Haven in Waggrakine WA, Kenwick Retreat in Kenwick WA, and Cloverdale WA. Contact the SIL team at 1300 380 692 to enquire about current vacancies
